Trigger Point Therapy
Specific sensitive points develop in muscles that are injured. These points perpetuate the cycle of pain and spasm in muscles and prevent healing and recovery. These are called “trigger points”, and they negatively affect the nerves controlling the muscle, creating pain.
Trigger points cause referred pain, which means that a trigger point in one muscle can cause pain in another area. Muscles with trigger points are painful and do not function normally.
They can occur as a result of:
- Repetitive overuse injuries caused by typing, mousing, gardening, etc.
- Heavy lifting
- Poor posture and sedentary lifestyle
- Mental/emotional stress that can cause muscle tension
- Direct injury such as a tear or strain
Treatment of trigger points involves releasing the trigger point so that the muscle locked in a shortened position is unlocked. It involves applying pressure to a trigger point and increasing the pressure until the trigger point relaxes and softens.
Some soreness can be expected for 1-2 days after treatment as this therapy can cause lactic acid to be released into the surrounding tissue, causing soreness. The soreness can be reduced by drinking plenty of fluids (preferably water) prior to and following treatment sessions.
